How the Part D Drug Program is changing...

Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and Part D Coverage: Changes for 2026

Annual Cap on Drug Costs: A $2,100 limit on out-of-pocket expenses. This means that once your covered medications reach this threshold, your prescription drug expenses will be covered in full for the remainder of the year.

Closure of the Donut Hole: In 2025 the donut hole was eliminated. This remains for 2026.

Monthly Drug Cost Distribution: Spread your costs over 12 months for better budgeting. This new option provides flexibility for those who struggle to afford their monthly prescription drug expenses. This means if you get hit with a large payment in January you can spread your costs over a 12 month period.

But these changes may impact your Plans for 2026:

Increasing premiums: Many, but not all, carriers are raising premiums to offset the increased costs associated with the IRA's reforms. Your out of pockets costs are being reduced on Part D Covered Medications , and the insurance carriers are required by the IRA to pick up the costs identifed in the Inflation Reduction Act.

Lowering benefits/Plans ending: Some carriers in order to remain profitable are reducing benefits on Medicare Advantage Plans, such as decreasing the number of covered services or increasing co-pays. Some carriers are eliminating many Medicare Advanatge Plans throughout the United States.

Discontinuing commission payments: Certain carriers are eliminating commission payments to insurance agents, like Golden Years. By eliminating insurance agent commissions, this may lead to reduced service and support for beneficiaries.
